How to use a bed wedge
A bed wedge is a triangular foam pillow used to elevate specific parts of your body post operative sleep or manage health conditions like acid reflux, snoring, and back pain.
1. Elevating Your Upper Body.
This is the most common use, ideal for acid reflux (GERD), snoring, and congestion.
Placement: Place the wide, thick end of the wedge at the head of the bed (against the headboard).
Body Position: Lie with your upper back and shoulders on the incline.
Crucial Tip: Do not place only your head on the wedge, as this kinks the neck. Your torso should start rising from the waist for a gradual, supportive incline.
2. Relieving Back Pain
Positioning a wedge can help align the spine and reduce pressure on the lower back.
Under the Knees: Lie on your back and place the wedge under your knees with the wide end facing you. This flattens the "gap" between your lower back and the mattress, relieving lumbar strain and sciatica symptoms.
For Side Sleepers: Use a wedge with a lower incline. Place the thicker end at the headboard and rest your head and shoulders on it to keep your spine neutral.
3. Elevating Legs and Feet
Helpful for reducing swelling, improving circulation, or recovering from surgery.
Placement: Place the wedge at the foot of the bed.
Body Position: Position the thicker end toward your hips and lay your lower legs along the incline so your feet are elevated above heart level.
4. Upright Support (Sitting Up)
Use the wedge as a supportive backrest for reading or watching TV.
Placement: Stand the wedge vertically against the headboard.
Position: Lean your back against the flat side of the incline with the wide base resting on the mattress.
Tips for Success
Adaptation Period: It often takes 1–2 weeks for your body to adjust to the new sleeping angle.
Prevent Sliding: Use a fitted sheet over the wedge or place a soft towel beneath you to add friction if you find yourself sliding down during the night.
Add a Pillow: Many people find it more comfortable to place their regular, thinner pillow on top of the wedge for extra head and neck cushioning.
